It began as an experiment. In 1986 Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family wanted to produce a drama series for the radio that would appeal to 8-12 year olds – in the hope of countering some of the questionable programming many kids were getting from Saturday morning cartoons. The program would take place in a small town where characters could explore the events, concerns and issues facing today's families.

John Whittaker - Adventures In Odyssey

In 1987, a 13-week test series was aired on the "Focus on the Family" broadcast. It was called "Family Portraits" and chronicled the lives and times of Odyssey residents -- including John Whittaker, his family and a special "soda shop and discovery emporium" called Whit's End.

Audience response was so favorable, Focus on the Family went one step further to create the program that would eventually be called "Adventures in Odyssey."

Adventures in Odyssey is recorded in Burbank, Calif., and edited here in Colorado Springs at Focus on the Family's studio.

The launch of Grace to You came with little fanfare. Just a few months before Apollo 11 landed, John MacArthur arrived at a small church on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Spawning a media ministry that would stretch to every corner of the globe was out of the question —the young pastor’s priority was simply to teach God’s Word.

But one man in the congregation immediately saw an opportunity and acted. Realizing some members were too ill to attend services, that church member began recording John’s lessons. That first tape contained a message titled “How to Play Church” and was the first resource produced by what would become Grace to You.

In the early years, the fledgling ministry captured John’s lessons on large reel-to-reel recorders and all the labor was carried out by part-time volunteers. By 1973, cassettes were circulating throughout the church and beyond. To meet the demand, one of the volunteers, Rick Draa, was hired full time.

In 1977, seemingly by accident, a few Grace to You tapes found their way on the air in Baltimore, Maryland, and ‘Grace to You’ radio was born. Christian radio was blossoming into a powerful, personal conduit for feeding people’s hunger for God’s Word and we were riding the crest of the wave. For some, our half-hour of teaching was a supplement to their strong local church. For others, it was a lifeline.

Radio not only allowed us daily access to millions of people, but it fueled demand for other resources. As John began writing, Grace to You became the launch pad for developing, editing, and distributing his books and study guides.

Horizon Christian Fellowship began in 1974 as a home Bible study of twelve people. Mike MacIntosh, then director of Maranatha! Music, drove from Orange County to San Diego every week to teach and lead the group.

By August 1974, the study had grown and moved to the Ocean Beach Women's Club, where it hosted evangelistic concerts along with Bible studies. Attendance grew so fast that within three months the fellowship had to move again, this time to the House of Hospitality in Balboa Park.

In February 1975, the church relocated to Linda Vista. A regular nursery and Sunday School operated along with Sunday morning and evening services, and Monday night concerts. Continued growth propelled a search for new facilities, which resulted in the purchase and renovation of the old North Park Theatre in the summer of 1976.

Insight for Living is the Bible-teaching radio ministry of Chuck Swindoll.

Even after graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary and spending nearly 15 years in the pastorate, Chuck brushed off the suggestion that he should consider launching a radio ministry.

But eventually he relented, and in the summer of 1977 his sermons from the First Evangelical Free Church in Fullerton, California, were broadcast on 27 stations in the United States. In 1971, Dr. Stanley became Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1972, a half-hour program was launched on an Atlanta-area television station. Soon after ICR reorganized into its present format and name in 1972, a local Christian radio affiliate of Family Radio Network, KECR, invited Dr. Henry Morris to host a weekly, 15-minute broadcast on their station. The programs, under the title, "Science, Scripture, & Salvation," were taped in the KECR studio. Later they were often taped in Dr. Morris' office on a portable cassette recorder.

Initial broadcasts covered many topics including some of the 100 topics in his book, The Bible Has the Answer, especially those answers dealing with scientific issues. The sound quality may have been inferior at times, but the material was God-honoring, and God blessed. Soon the entire Family Radio Network had picked up the program and has continued to grow ever since.

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Time in the Word is the radio ministry of Pastor Steve Mellor. It is our desire that you spend time each day in God’s Word the Bible.

Steve is the Pastor of the Christian Center in Borrego Springs, California. The Christian Center was started in 1989 by Pastor Walter Buck as a non-denominational fellowship. Pastor Buck went to be with the Lord in 1996. In January of 1997 Steve Mellor, who previously worked with the youth of the church, became the Pastor and subsequently we came into fellowship with Calvary Chapel. Since 1997 we have been systematically studying through the Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Our vision is to fulfill the Great Commission given by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20 to preach the Gospel and equip the saints.
